Valentine's Day

Zaktualizowano: 16 lut 2021

Valentine's Day is an annual holiday of love celebrated on 14th February. The name comes from St. Valentine, patron of not only lovers, but also epileptics and people with mental illnesses. On this day we send letters with declarations of love (often written in verses), and we give our sympathies small gifts like chocolates.

But how did it all begin? Where did this holiday celebrated around the world come from? Read about history and some interesting facts about this day…

Origins of Valentine’s Day

The history of the lovers' holiday began in ancient Rome. Lupercalia was a celebration in honor of Faun, the patron of fertility, forests and fields. It was celebrated on 14th February and was spent playing games and searching for the love. Unmarried women would put a note with their name on it into a special urn, then boys would take it out - the drawn girl would become his partner for the rest of the game, and sometimes even for the rest of his life.

Patron of Valentine’s Day is St. Valentine

He was a priest* and martyr** who lived in the first centuries of Christianity. For giving weddings (Emperor Claudius II Gothicus banned marriages) and preaching the Word of God, St. Valentine was imprisoned. In the prison he converted*** a guard and healed his daughter (the girl was epileptic or had lost her sight) and he was sentenced to death. According to the legend, before the sentence was carried out, Valentine gave the girl a letter. It was in the shape of a heart with a signature “from your Valentine”.

* Priest – Biskup

** Martyr – Męczennik

*** To convert – Nawrócić
